​Who is this course for?

This course is designed especially for beginners.

If you have never enamelled before, don't worry. Eleanor will explain the process clearly and guide you through each stage, from preparing the copper through to firing your finished decorations in the kiln.

It’s also a lovely creative day to enjoy with a friend and a chance to make personalised decorations for your own Christmas tree.

What will you learn?

During the day, you’ll learn how to:

• Understand what vitreous enamel is and how it is used on copper

• Prepare copper shapes ready for enamelling

• Safely sift powdered enamel onto copper

• Use a kiln safely to fire your enamelled pieces

• Build up colour and create a glossy enamelled finish

• Experiment with simple and effective decorative techniques

• Choose colours and develop your own Christmas-themed designs

• Use metallic-shimmer enamels for an extra festive effect

• Mount your finished decorations onto braid, ribbon or cord ready to hang

You don’t need to be able to draw. A selection of Christmas-themed shapes and examples will provide plenty of inspiration.

What will you make?

You’ll make at least three finished enamelled copper Christmas decorations during the course.

The shapes vary and have a festive theme, with examples including:

• Christmas trees

• Angels

• Baubles

• Polar bears

• Snowflakes

• Stars

You’ll be able to choose your own colours and decorative ideas, making each piece personal to you.

Your finished decorations will be fired to create a durable, glossy enamel surface and mounted onto braid, ribbon or cord ready to hang on your tree.

There will also be the option to use enamels with a metallic shimmer to give your decorations an extra touch of Christmas sparkle.

Your day in the studio

We’ll start by looking at what vitreous enamel is and how a kiln is used to achieve a beautiful enamelled finish.

You’ll then prepare your copper shapes and learn how to safely sift your enamel before firing your pieces.

After lunch, the focus will be on decorating your pieces and firing them to achieve a professional finish. Once they are complete, you’ll mount them onto braid, ribbon or cord ready to hang.

Throughout the day, Eleanor will demonstrate the techniques and help you develop your own designs.
