Who is this course for?

This course is suitable for:

• Makers with some previous enamelling experience

• People who understand the basic principles of enamelling and want to develop their skills

• Enamellers interested in learning how to enamel onto curved copper surfaces

• Makers who want to explore larger-scale enamelling and new decorative possibilities

Please note: This is an intermediate-level course, so some prior knowledge of enamelling is required.

The course is suitable for ages 16 and over.

 

What will you learn?

During the day course you will learn how to:

• Prepare spun copper bowls for enamelling

• Work safely with enamel and kiln equipment

• Apply powdered glass enamel to curved copper surfaces

• Explore techniques for working on both concave and convex surfaces

• Develop your own decorative designs

• Experiment with colour and surface decoration

• Use different enamelling techniques and materials

• Understand the kiln-firing process

• Apply good health and safety practices when working with enamel and a kiln

• Develop your confidence working on three-dimensional copper forms

There will also be an opportunity to learn from other participants and exchange ideas while developing your own designs.

What will you make?

During the course you will work on two small spun copper bowls, approximately 7.5cm (3 inches) in diameter.

You will develop decorative enamelled surfaces on the bowls, creating individual pieces that demonstrate the techniques explored during the course.

Techniques and surfaces

A particular focus of this course is learning to enamel on curved copper surfaces.

You will explore:

• Concave surfaces

• Convex surfaces

• Colour and surface decoration

• Kiln-fired enamelling

• Decorative enamel techniques

• Developing designs for three-dimensional forms

Working on curved copper creates different challenges from enamelling flat metal and provides an opportunity to develop your existing skills further.
