Who is this course for?

This course is ideal for adults aged 16 and over who have no previous experience of working with fused glass.

Younger students aged 12 and over can also attend when accompanied by a paying adult.

Whether you are completely new to glass or already enjoy making things, this is a relaxed and creative introduction to making your own fused glass jewellery.

What will you learn?

During the day, you’ll learn how to:

• Cut glass safely and combine different types of glass

• Develop your own jewellery designs

• Work with a wide variety of glass and decorative media

• Explore the reflective and jewel-like qualities of dichroic glass

• Use copper, mica, stringers, millefiori, frit, vitrigraph and confetti glass

• Experiment with glass paints and bubble paint

• Use decals and other transfers

• Explore firing at different temperatures, including tack fusing

• Plan how your fused glass pieces will be mounted onto jewellery findings

• Be shown how to glue your finished pieces onto jewellery findings for a professional finish

There are lots of different combinations to explore, so you’ll have plenty of opportunity to experiment and develop your own ideas.

What will you make?

You’ll make your own collection of fused glass jewellery pieces, which can include:

• Glass cabochons

• Pendants

• Stud earrings

• Other individual jewellery pieces

You can make approximately 10–15 pieces, depending on the designs you choose.

Once your glass pieces have been fired, you’ll learn how to mount them onto silver-plated jewellery findings to create finished pieces that you can wear or give as gifts.

Explore dichroic glass

Dichroic glass is one of the highlights of this course. Its reflective, sparkling qualities can create beautiful jewel-like effects when used in jewellery.

You’ll have the opportunity to combine dichroic glass with other types of glass and decorative materials to create colourful and individual pieces.

The course includes:

• All glass and enamelling/fusing materials required for the course

• Kiln firings

• A wide selection of glass and decorative media

• A starter supply of jewellery findings

• Two tubes of adhesive suitable for mounting your finished pieces

• Tea, coffee and biscuits

• Plenty of individual guidance from Eleanor

There are numerous cafés in the area for lunch, or you are welcome to bring a packed lunch.

​

Your finished fused glass pieces will be posted out to you after firing. Alternatively, you can arrange to collect them from the studio.

This is a working glass studio rather than a conventional classroom. Participants therefore need to be comfortable standing while cutting and preparing glass and working at benches. Stools are available between activities.
